HYPNOTHERAPY

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a very powerful and effective technique used to create change in behavior. With a long history of clinical use going back to the formative work of Franz Anton Mesmer (1734 - 1815), a Vienese physician.  Hypnotism has been used to utilise the natural capabilities of the brain and body to heal themselves.

Hypnotism works through relaxation and suggestion, by accessing the regulatory power of the 'unconscious mind', hypnotism can be used in a very direct and deliberate manner to direct physical and psychological change. Unlike the traditional talking therapies, hynotism seeks to directly influence behaviour.

A natural mental state, hypnosis, is a type of mental and physical relaxation. In a relaxed state, the unconscious mind becomes more accessible. In conjunction with the willingness and cooperation of a client, hynotism can enable direct and specific suggestions to be made to the brain. In an hypnotic and relaxed state of mind and if the suggestions are congruent with the clients values and desires, suggestions can be readily absorbed and can begin to work on a level outside of thinking, below the normal state of awareness.

The effect of this is that the individual can experience a change in behavior quite rapidly and changes in mood and behaviour can happen almost immediately.  In the case of trying to give up smoking, compulsive eating or anxiety reduction for example, a single hypnosis session can bring change. To maximise the effects of hypnotism a comprehensive assessment and back up process of support will enhance overall outcome. Ongoing progress can be further persued through a series of sessions where the opportunity for the client to work with the hypnotic suggestion and build upon results are advised. It should be remembered that the effectiveness of any change that one desires is relative to the effort, willingness and practice put into its outcome.

Hypnotism is also an exceptionally powerful tool for relaxation, stress reduction and pain reduction. The hypnotic state enables the brain to become free of mental clutter and as a result becomes clear and very focused. People report a change in their energy levels and an overall sense of empowerment, clarity and well being result. This can be exceptionally usefull to anyone who experiences stress in their lives or work place, is required to recall information or is facing examinations (students etc.) or is seeking a method of learning how to relax more fully and feel in control of their lives. Hypnotism is also commonly used to cope with stress, increase confidence and a favoured method for treating anxiety.

Some common issues that can be treated or supported effectively by hypnotism are:

  • Smoking

  • Alcohol reduction

  • Weight loss / eating management / Hypno Gastric Band

  • Stress

  • Pain

  • Anxiety

  • Public speaking / presentation anxiety
